Safety & child data
Is Lumi safe for children?
Safety is the foundation, not a feature. Lumi’s responses are tuned to be age-appropriate, it works inside a curated, education-only world with no open web, and teachers can see conversations and set boundaries. A teacher is always the final word.
What happens if a child asks something unsafe?
Lumi’s guardrails are designed to handle sensitive or unsafe questions gently and appropriately. It won’t provide harmful detail; instead it responds with care, encourages the learner to talk to a trusted adult, and flags the conversation so the supervising teacher can follow up.
What data do you collect, and how is it protected?
We collect only what learning requires, aligned with the Kenya Data Protection Act. We don’t sell personal data or use children’s conversations to train third-party models. See our privacy & child-safety notice for the details.
Who can see a learner's conversations?
Educators can see conversations, set boundaries and steer how Lumi supports their class. People review and refine Lumi continuously, with a teacher always in the loop.
The product
What can Lumi help with?
Anything in a learner’s studies — from fractions to photosynthesis — broken down step by step, at the right level, until it clicks. Lumi notices what’s landing and adjusts pace, examples and difficulty for each child.
Does Lumi work offline?
Yes. Lumi is designed to work online or fully offline, so it reaches classrooms with limited or no connectivity.
What devices does Lumi run on?
The phones, tablets or low-cost devices schools already have. Learners can ask by text, voice or by snapping a photo of a worksheet.
Pilots & pricing
How do pilots work?
We set Lumi up for a class or whole school, your teachers get onboarding and a dashboard, and learners start exploring. See For schools for the full picture, or request a pilot.
How much does Lumi cost?
We’re building Lumi to cost around $3 a month per learner for an always-on tutor. Pilots are free, and where families can’t pay we fund it through grants and partners so cost never blocks a learner.
How long is a pilot, and what does it involve?
A typical pilot runs 8–12 weeks, for anything from a single class (around 40 learners) up to a whole school. A teacher needs about an hour to get set up, then just a few minutes here and there. We keep pilots simple and stay close to your team throughout.
Funding & partnerships
How is Lumi funded?
Lumi is a mission-driven effort funded by grants, foundations and partners who share the goal of reaching every learner. Learn more on Funders & grants.
How can I support or fund Lumi?
You can sponsor schools, regions or whole cohorts and follow your impact on a transparent dashboard. Start a partnership conversation and we’ll come back with a concrete way to help.
